If you pay close attention, especially in the work of young designers, you can recognize some themes that are also present in society. We see it all around us. Some of the themes I noticed during Salone del Mobile in Milan this april:
Nature remains a great source of inspiration. I saw a lot of nature photography used, but also literally: stools in the shape of a bird for example. In several booths you could hear birds singing and I also spotted styling with birds and other natural ingredients.
A number of young designers is working with shortages of food and natural resources, climate change and survival. For example, I saw a material experiment for protective clothing that can withstand intense heat.
This is still a small trend. Many young designers are working with time and experiencing time. Watches without dial, objects that visualize time or make time more tangible, special hourglasses…
Italian brand Nullame: “Nullame is a time that does not want to be counted, but contemplated and experienced. Nullame sheds itself of seconds and minutes, of hours and hands. Nullame is the time to be. Choose your time.”
stars and planets
Space, the moon, stars and planets ….a theme that was very evident at the fair this year. If you think about this further, it is not that surprising: clearly linked with scarcity of resources and dreaming. Spotted at Moooi, Diesel and in the middle a nice duvet by Nienke Sybrandy that lights up in the dark.
