A couple of weeks ago I went to Bilbao for a long weekend. Bilbao is located in the north of Spain and is since 1997 one of the five cities with its very own Guggenheim museum. I wanted to visit the Guggenheim for quite some time, so that was the first thing I wanted to do when we arrived…The Guggenheim is one of the most important musea for the modern arts. The deconstructive-like architecture itself is already a piece of art. Works that are displayed inside vary from modern art to reputable artists like Picasso.
The structure is designed by North American architect Frank Gehry, who spared no expense in making it look beautiful. It consists out of three different layers which are placed in each other, which results in a ship-like appearance. I think I’ve explored the structure for at least three hours to take many pictures and just to gaze upon the lovely details.
In addition to this lovely museum, Bilbao offers a great diversity of architectural styles. Like a big market building with a lot of fresh local products. Furthermore, there is a great shopping street in the newer part of the city and you can eat lovely tapas in the old part of the city. From a nice viewing point, you can glance over the entire city.
Are you looking for an unforgettable city trip but have you already been to Barcelona, Rome, or Berlin? Then I would recommend Bilbao! The city that is, apart from the many styles, a typical Spanish delight.
